Karapuzha Dam is the largest earth dam in Kerala, stretching across the Karapuzha River with a vast expanse of calm water surrounded by gentle green hills. The zipline here lets you fly over a section of the reservoir, taking in views of the water, the tree-lined banks, and the distant ridgelines of the Western Ghats. Because the dam is only about 13 kilometres from Kalpetta, it is one of the easiest adventure activities to fit into a Wayanad itinerary, whether you are on a short weekend trip or a longer holiday exploring the district.

What to Expect

The Karapuzha Dam Zipline launches from a platform set above the reservoir’s edge and carries you across the water at an exhilarating speed. The ride gives you a bird’s-eye view of the dam’s broad surface, the surrounding coconut palms and deciduous trees, and the hills that frame the reservoir on all sides. The actual zipline ride lasts about one to two minutes, but the preparation process, including a safety briefing, harness fitting, and helmet check, adds another 10 to 15 minutes. Professional instructors handle all the equipment and guide you through each step. The harness system includes a full-body harness, a secure trolley attachment, a helmet, and gloves. The landing zone is well-padded with staff ready to assist. After the zipline, most visitors combine the experience with a pedal boat or speed boat ride on the reservoir, which is available nearby. The calm waters and open sky make the area particularly enjoyable in the late afternoon when the light turns golden over the water.

How to Reach

Karapuzha Dam is located approximately 13 kilometres from Kalpetta along the Kalpetta-Mananthavady road. From Kalpetta, the drive takes about 20 to 25 minutes on a well-maintained road that passes through a mix of small towns and farmland. From Sultan Bathery, the distance is roughly 30 kilometres via Kalpetta, taking about 50 minutes. From Mananthavady, the dam is about 25 kilometres away, taking around 40 minutes. If you are arriving from Kozhikode, drive up the Thamarassery Ghat to Kalpetta (about 70 km, roughly 2.5 hours) and then continue north towards the dam. Regular KSRTC and private buses connect Kalpetta to the Karapuzha junction, from where auto-rickshaws are available to reach the dam and adventure park. The nearest railway station is Kozhikode (about 80 km), and the nearest airport is Kannur International Airport (approximately 90 km).
