Kanthanpara Waterfalls is one of Wayanad’s most accessible and family-friendly waterfalls, set amid coffee plantations and spice gardens near the small town of Meppadi. Unlike many waterfalls in the Western Ghats that demand long, steep treks, Kanthanpara requires only a short, easy walk from the parking area, making it suitable for visitors of all ages and fitness levels. The cascade drops about 30 feet over a rocky ledge into a small pool below, surrounded by lush tropical greenery that keeps the air cool and fragrant year-round.

What Makes Kanthanpara Special

The waterfall’s appeal lies in its gentle, approachable character. During the monsoon months from June to September, the falls swell to an impressive volume and the surrounding forest turns an intense shade of green. In the drier post-monsoon season from October to February, the water flow is calmer and the pool at the base becomes shallow enough for wading and light swimming — a rare treat at Wayanad’s waterfalls, where strong currents often make water contact unsafe. The path from the entrance to the falls is paved with steps and takes no more than 10 to 15 minutes, passing through a canopy of coffee bushes, pepper vines, and wild cardamom.

How to Reach Kanthanpara Waterfalls

Kanthanpara Waterfalls is located near Meppadi, approximately 22 km from Kalpetta on the Kalpetta–Meppadi road. From Kalpetta, drive toward Meppadi and watch for signboards directing you to the falls; the turnoff leads to a small parking area managed by the local tourism committee. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are available from both Kalpetta and Meppadi. The nearest airport is Calicut International Airport, about 87 km away, and the nearest railway station is Kozhikode, roughly 75 km from the falls.

The Landscape Around the Falls

The area surrounding Kanthanpara is part of the Meppadi plantation belt, one of Wayanad’s most scenic corridors. Coffee and tea estates carpet the hillsides, and small-scale spice farms grow pepper, cardamom, and vanilla under the shade of silver oak trees. Walking along the approach road gives you a taste of this agricultural landscape, and some local farms welcome visitors for informal tours where you can see how coffee cherries are processed. The biodiversity here is also notable — Malabar grey hornbills, racket-tailed drongos, and several species of kingfisher are regularly spotted in the canopy near the falls.

Kanthanpara pairs well with Wayanad’s other major waterfalls for a full day of exploration. Soochipara Waterfalls, a dramatic three-tiered cascade also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, is about 20 km away and offers a more adventurous experience with a steeper descent to the pool. Meenmutty Waterfalls, the tallest waterfall in Wayanad at nearly 300 metres across three tiers, is roughly 25 km from Kanthanpara and requires a moderate trek through the forest. For a change of pace after waterfall-hopping, the tranquil Pookode Lake is a pleasant 30-minute drive north and provides a relaxed setting for boating and lakeside walks.
