Pazhassi Tomb

Pazhassi Tomb stands in a quiet, tree-shaded compound on the outskirts of Mananthavady, marking the cremation site of Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, one of the earliest Indian rulers to organise sustained armed resistance against the British East India Company. Often called the Lion of Kerala, Pazhassi Raja led a guerrilla campaign through the forests of Wayanad from 1797 until his death in 1805, rallying tribal warriors and local fighters against a colonial force that vastly outnumbered them. The tomb and its small attached museum offer visitors a window into this chapter of Indian history that is less well known outside Kerala but deeply important to the region’s identity.

The Monument and Museum

The tomb itself is a simple but dignified stone structure set within a landscaped garden. It was renovated and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, and the grounds are kept clean and peaceful. Adjacent to the tomb is a small museum that displays artifacts, weapons, documents, and illustrated panels telling the story of Pazhassi Raja’s campaigns against the British. The exhibits cover his alliances with Wayanad’s tribal communities, particularly the Kurichiya people, who formed the backbone of his guerrilla forces. A visit to the museum adds important context to the tomb and typically takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Historical Significance

Pazhassi Raja ruled the Kottayam kingdom in northern Kerala and initially cooperated with the British before a series of disputes over revenue and sovereignty led to open conflict. His resistance was remarkable for its use of terrain and guerrilla tactics in the dense forests of Wayanad, and the British required years and significant military resources to bring the campaign to an end. He died on 30 November 1805 in the forests near Wayanad rather than surrender, and his body was cremated at the spot where the tomb now stands. The anniversary of his death is observed locally each year.

How to Reach

Pazhassi Tomb is located about 1 kilometre from the centre of Mananthavady town. From Kalpetta, Mananthavady is approximately 30 kilometres to the north, a drive of about 50 minutes along the winding hill road. From Sulthan Bathery, the distance is around 35 kilometres. The tomb is well-signposted within Mananthavady and is a short auto-rickshaw ride from the bus stand. If you are driving from Kalpetta toward Thirunelli Temple or Tholpetty, Mananthavady falls directly on your route, making a stop at the tomb easy to combine with a longer day trip.
