Wayanad in October 2026: Why Post-Monsoon Is the Best Time to Visit
October is when Wayanad comes alive — treks reopen, safaris resume, waterfalls still flow, and the landscape is at its greenest. Weather, prices, what's open, and a sample itinerary.
If you have been putting off a Wayanad trip because you heard monsoon season is risky, October is when you should go. The heavy rains have moved on, every major attraction reopens, waterfalls are still thundering from four months of monsoon rainfall, and the landscape is the greenest it will be all year.
October also happens to be when prices are still reasonable, crowds have not yet peaked, and the weather is at that perfect sweet spot — warm days, cool mornings, clear skies with the occasional dramatic cloud formation.
Here is everything you need to know about visiting Wayanad in October 2026.
Weather in October
October is when Wayanad transitions from monsoon to the clear season. The southwest monsoon retreats, and the northeast monsoon may bring occasional light showers — but nothing like the sustained downpours of June through September.
Temperatures: 16°C to 28°C. Mornings are cool (especially around Lakkidi and Vythiri), afternoons are warm but not hot, and evenings are pleasant for outdoor dining and bonfires.
Rainfall: Light and intermittent. Expect 100–200 mm for the month compared to 800+ mm in July. Rain usually comes as brief afternoon showers that clear quickly.
Humidity: Drops significantly from monsoon levels. Much more comfortable for trekking and outdoor activities.
What to pack: Light layers, a rain jacket (just in case), shoes with grip for still-damp trails, and sunscreen for clear-sky days.
What Reopens in October
This is the exciting part. October is when the Forest Department lifts monsoon closures one by one:
Treks:
- Chembra Peak — The heart-shaped lake trek reopens, typically in early October. Trails may still be muddy in the first week. Book permits early as pent-up demand is high
- Banasura Hills — Challenging trek reopens with spectacular post-monsoon views
- Pakshipathalam — Remote forest trek to the natural cave near Thirunelli
Wildlife:
- Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary and Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary — Daily morning and afternoon safari schedules resume. October sighting rates are excellent as animals are active near water sources and forest edges
- Bamboo Forest — Elephant corridor route is at its most lush
Water attractions:
- Kuruva Island — Bamboo rafting on the Kabini River reopens as water levels normalise
- Banasura Dam — Speedboat operations resume. The reservoir is still near full capacity with the island formations still visible
Adventure parks:
- Teenzania Adventure Park — Fully operational with ziplines, rope courses, and ATV rides
- All zipline operations across the district resume
Always open (monsoon or not):
- Edakkal Caves — The 8,000-year-old petroglyphs are even more atmospheric with occasional mist
- Pookode Lake — Pedal boating, nature walks, aquarium
- Mitti Pottery Studio — Indoor activity, perfect for any weather
- Viewpoints: Nellarachal, Manjapaara, Phantom Rock
Waterfalls at Their Best
October gives you the best of both worlds — waterfalls are still carrying heavy monsoon flow, but trails are drier and safer than during peak monsoon.
- Soochipara Falls — Three-tiered cascade with a natural swimming pool. October water levels make the falls spectacular while swimming becomes safer
- Meenmutty Waterfalls — Wayanad’s tallest at 300 metres. The forest trek to reach it is challenging but manageable in October
- Kanthanpara Waterfalls — Easy access, family-friendly, still flowing well
- Chethalayam Waterfalls — Seasonal waterfall that is at its most impressive right after monsoon
Navaratri and Dussehra in Wayanad (October 11–20)
October 2026 brings Navaratri (October 11–19) and Dussehra/Vijayadashami (October 20) — adding a cultural layer to your trip.
Vidyarambham on Vijayadashami day is one of Kerala’s most touching traditions. Young children are formally initiated into learning by writing their first letters in rice grains, guided by a parent or guru. Temples across Wayanad hold Vidyarambham ceremonies — Thirunelli Temple in the forested Brahmagiri Hills is a particularly atmospheric venue for this ritual.
Saraswati Puja (October 18) sees books, instruments, and tools of learning placed before the goddess. It is a day when students traditionally do not study — a welcome excuse to be outdoors instead.
Travel note: Schools close for 3–5 days around Dussehra. Expect more families travelling and slightly busier attractions during this period. Book accommodation a week ahead if your dates overlap with Navaratri.

Accommodation and Pricing
October is a sweet spot for value. Monsoon discounts start fading but peak-season rates have not kicked in yet.

| Luxury resort | ₹3,000–6,000 | ₹4,000–8,000 | ₹8,000–15,000 |
Best value hack: Visit on weekdays in early October (before Navaratri). You get reopened treks, flowing waterfalls, green landscapes, and near-monsoon pricing — arguably the best deal of the entire year.

Why October Beats December
Most travel sites will tell you December is the best month for Wayanad. December has better weather on paper — but October has three advantages that make it arguably better for most travellers:
The green factor. By December, the post-monsoon green starts fading. October is when the Western Ghats are at their most verdant — every shade of green you can imagine, paddy fields at their lushest, and mist playing across the hillsides.
The waterfall factor. By December, waterfalls start diminishing. October waterfalls carry four months of monsoon water and are far more impressive than their dry-season versions.
The crowd factor. December is packed — especially Christmas and New Year weeks. October weekdays give you the same attractions with a fraction of the visitors. No queue at Edakkal Caves, no scramble for Chembra permits, no fully booked resorts.
The trade-off? October may have occasional light showers. For most travellers, that is a worthwhile exchange for a greener, more dramatic, less crowded Wayanad.
